American roaches are another common roach found in San Diego county. Unlike
German cockroaches, they prefer living outside in moist areas such as sewers
and heavily mulched areas. They are larger than German cockroaches and tend not
to be as invasive as the German cockroach. They are not introduced like German
roaches and are less likely to become a serious infestation in your home. If
they do find their way into a structure, it is typically in search of moisture
and quite possibly through a plumbing void in an area like a laundry room or

over 200 species of ants. They are social insects that live together in

important that a pest professional inspect and identify the type of ant and
then discuss options for controlling the infestation. Typically liquid
suspensions, granules, and baits will be used for control of ants.
Subterranean Termites live underground and create mud tubes that they use as tunnels to transport themselves to the wood members of a structure. Subterranean termites are treated by injecting termiticide into the ground where they have formed their colony.
Drywood termites actually live in the wood members of a structure, such as framing or fasica boards. Because they live within the wood, the first sign is often tiny wood pellets that the termites push out of the wood. When an infestation is clearly accessibly and in only a small localized area, it may be possible to treat that area by injecting a termiticide into the wood. More often, a fumigation is recommended so that the entire structure can be treated. There is not an injectable termiticide that can treat an entire structure. Only fumigation with a gas that will pass through the structure walls or a heat treatment are currently methods to treat entire structures.

The following information on scorpions
is provided by The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health.
Usually scorpion stings are not fatal, but their sting can
be very painful and will need treatment. If
you are stung, you should follow these steps:
Call Your doctor or emergency services
Be calm and do not move too much.
Do not raise the affected area (such as
legs, if the sting occurs on a leg).
Remove blood or venom from around the sting
by wiping away from the sting area.
Use ice cubes to dull some of the pain.
Bandage the sting area tightly. Scorpion Venom
The venom of scorpions is used both for
prey capture and defense. Their venoms are complex mixtures of toxins,
which affect the victim's nervous system, and other substances. Each type of
scorpion has its own mixture. Although these creatures have a bad name, only
one species in the United States has venom strong enough to seriously harm
humans. Scorpion Control
Scorpions do not nest, so it is hard to
treat them with insecticides. A general pesticide can be used to help set up a
boundry around the perimeter of the home. One of the best ways to control scorpions is
to capture them, but you must be careful. Scorpions glow under a black light,
so you can use it to find where they are hiding. To be safe, where boots and

more than 4,000 species of cockroaches worldwide, the most common species being
the German cockroach. Cockroaches have been associated with spreading germs,
bacteria, and parasites and their fecal matter is a known trigger of allergies
German cockroaches undergo three distinct life phases: egg, nymph and
adult. Their entire life cycle spans approximately 100 days. German
cockroaches breed continually and a female cockroach could produce as many as
German cockroaches can live without food for one month, but will only
survive one week without water.
German cockroaches are insects that are introduced into a structure- meaning
they are brought in and transported by people. They do not live outside in
sewers and accidentally find their way into a home.
Treatment for German roaches is intensive and requires specific preparations
in order for the treatment to be successful. In apartment buildings, townhomes,
and other structures with attached walls, the roaches will spread through the
walls, running along conduit and plumbing.
Typically two treatments for German roaches would be performed. A series of
liquid suspension products with growth regulators, baits, and dusts may be used
to control a roach infestation. A key element to the success of treatment is
the preparation of the occupant and following a certain regimen to avoid a
Rodents are destructive pests that can spread disease,
contaminate food and destroy property.
They vary in color and size by species.
The most common rodents that live near humans

of the health concerns related to rodents, anyone who believes they may have a
problem with rodents should contact a licensed pest management professional. A trained professional
should be able to recognize and eliminate rodent access points, as well as,
trap and remove the rodents from your home and keep them out.
Bees, Wasps (which include
hornets and yellow jackets), and scorpions are all stinging insects in San
Africanized honeybees are called "killer
bees" because they aggressively attack in great numbers, leading to
massive stinging incidents. The large amount of venom injected by many bees at
one time can cause death.
The venom of the Africanized honeybee is no
more likely to cause an allergic reaction or toxic reaction than that of the
European honeybee. But the European honeybee is not as aggressive.
Africanized honey bees are less predictable and
more defensive than European honey bees. They are more likely to defend a
greater area around their nest. They have been known to chase their enemy for
up to 1/4 of a mile. They respond faster than European honey bees and in
The two types of bees look the same and their
behavior is similar in many respects. Neither is likely to sting when gathering
nectar and pollen from flowers, but both will sting in defense if
provoked. A swarm of bees in flight or briefly at
rest seldom bothers people. However, all bees become defensive when they
settle, begin producing wax comb and raising young.
If a bee colony has set up shop in your wall or
attic, the entire hive must be removed and the area sealed to prevent future
infestations. If honeycomb is left in the walls it can seep through the walls
causing damage. Also future swarms of bees will be attracted to the location
due to the pheromones left by the old colony.
If you do have a bee concern. Call a professional.
Hornets and yellow jackets are types of
wasps. Although bees can only sting once, wasps can sting a person repeatedly
without losing their stingers. Reactions
can vary from minor to severe.
Wasp stings cause different reactions
Most people have a minor reaction.
Intense immediate pain and itching may be present and may last from a few hours
to a few days. A toxic reaction can occur when a person has been stung 10 or
more times. Like with bees, a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction can
Wasps are usually more aggressive than
bees, even than the Africanized bees. If you notice wasps nests at the exterior
of your home, DO NOT try to remove the active nest on your own. Call a
professional to remove the nest.
